Car Audio Amp Draw Calculator

Use this amp draw calculator to estimate how many amps your amplifier pulls, what fuse size makes sense, and what wire gauge you should be thinking about. This helps you avoid voltage drop, dimming lights, hot wire, and underbuilt electrical systems.

Estimate Your Amp Draw

Enter your total RMS power, amplifier class, and charging voltage. This gives you a realistic current draw estimate for planning your electrical system.

Quick amp draw reference chart

These are rough Class D estimates at 14.4V. Real systems vary with music, rise, voltage drop, and efficiency.

RMS PowerEstimated DrawTypical OFC Wire
500W43A–50A8 or 4 AWG
1000W86A–95A4 AWG minimum
1500W130A–145A2 AWG / 1-0 AWG
2000W173A–190A1/0 AWG
3000W260A–285ADual 1/0 AWG likely

🚨 OFC vs CCA wire matters more than people think

OFC is oxygen-free copper. CCA is copper-clad aluminum. CCA does not carry current as well, meaning you often need a thicker gauge for the same job. Cheap CCA wire is one of the easiest ways to create voltage drop and hot cable in a high-power system.

Why this calculator matters

Wire Planning

Current draw tells you whether your wire size is realistic or dangerously undersized.

Fuse Sizing

Fuse planning helps protect the car and exposes bogus amp ratings that don’t match the fuse bank.

Electrical Upgrades

As amp draw rises, the chances that you need Big 3, reserve battery support, or alternator help go up fast.

Amp draw calculator FAQ

Is amp draw constant all the time?

No. Current draw changes with music, volume, impedance rise, voltage, and how hard the amplifier is actually working.

Why does the formula say more amps than I usually see?

Because the formula is based on electrical demand at power. Real music is dynamic, so your average draw during normal listening is usually lower than the peak estimate.

Does a more efficient amp reduce current draw?

Yes. A more efficient amp wastes less energy as heat, so it usually pulls less current for the same RMS power output.

When should I upgrade my electrical system?

If you see voltage drop, dimming lights, weak output, or protect mode under load β€” or if your estimated current draw is high β€” your stock electrical may be falling behind.

Need to match power, wiring, and electrical together?

Use the amp setup, amp match, and wiring tools together before you buy or wire anything.
